We loved Mayrhofen. The Goulash soup was great, and the parks were world-class. But for our 2026 trip, the group chat voted for a massive change. We are leaving the Austrian comfort zone and heading to Les Arcs (Paradiski), France.
Why fix what isn’t broken? It wasn’t a random choice. A friend sent us a YouTube video of Les Arc and, more importantly, a brutal data comparison of last season’s snowpack. Once we saw the numbers, the decision was made for us.
Here is exactly how we planned, booked, and budgeted our 2026 French Experiment (and the hidden logistics traps we found along the way).
The Convincer: The 320cm Snow Argument
We usually love Austria, but we are always chasing Freeride options. One member of our crew dropped this comparison table into the group chat, showing the peak snow depths from the 2024/2025 season:
| Resort | Peak Snow Depth | Monthly Mid-Season Snow Depth |
| Les Arcs | 320 cm, reached on 17 April 2025 | March ~264 cm April ~281 cm |
| Ischgl | 70 cm, reach on 23 December 2024 | March ~90 cm April ~103 cm |
| Mayrhofen | 80 cm, reached on 25 December 2024 | March ~72 cm April ~65 cm |
That is 4x more snow. With 425km of pistes in Paradiski, plus Tignes (another 300km+) just a short drive away (about 45 minutes) the potential for off-piste exploration is just on another level compared to the Zillertal valley.
The Flight Trap: Why You MUST Call Lufthansa (Even if You Paid)
We booked this back in September 2025 (a bit late for us, usually we start booking everything the beginning of summer).
- The Route: Riga -> Frankfurt -> Lyon (Lufthansa).
- The Cost: €246 per person (Return, including checked bags & snowboard gear).
⚠️ The “Lufthansa Trap”: Why You Need to Register Your Bag
Unlike AirBaltic where you just pay for “Sports Equipment” during checkout, Lufthansa requires a specific reservation for your snowboard bag.
- The Rule: You must register your sports baggage at least 72 hours before departure.
- The Risk: If the cargo hold is full (common on ski routes like Frankfurt-Lyon), they can legally leave your board behind.
Option 1: The Online Form (Try this first)
Lufthansa recently launched a hidden registration form. It is faster than calling, but it does not give instant confirmation.
- Link: https://www.lufthansa.com/is/en/add-sports-baggage.html
- Warning: After you submit this, watch your email like a hawk. If you do not receive a confirmation PDF within 24 hours, use Option 2.
Option 2: The “Fail-Safe” Phone Call
If the online form fails or your trip is in less than 3 days, pick up the phone. It is the only way to get an instant “Yes, your board is on the plane.”
- Latvia (Riga Airport Office):
+371 67 852 199 - 24/7 Service Center (English/German):
+49 69 86 799 799
🛑 CRITICAL: Check Your Ticket Type If you booked an “Economy Light” ticket, your snowboard bag is NOT free. You will have to pay ~€80 each way. Only “Economy Classic” and above get the free ski bag allowance. Check your booking code now!
The Rental Van: Beware the Mileage Limit
We land in Lyon, which is about 200km from the resort. We looked online at vans inside the airport and the cheaper ones 4km away. The price difference was huge (~€300), but we noticed a trap in the fine print.

- The Trap: The cheapest options (€800) often come with a mileage limit.
- The Math: Lyon to Bourg-Saint-Maurice is 500km round-trip. Driving to lifts, shops, or a day trip to Tignes would probably push us over the limit, costing €100+ in fees. Some companies charge per extra 100km, some have a tariff for each extra kilometer.
- The Solution: We paid a bit more for peace of mind. We booked a 9-seater with “Budget” (Unlimited Mileage) for €690 total.
Pro Tip: Always check the mileage cap before booking in France.
The Accommodation: The “Shoebox” Sacrifice
In Austria, we are used to renting big houses. In France, space costs money. To keep the budget under control, we compromised. We aren’t staying on the slopes in Arc 1800. We are staying down in the valley town of Bourg-Saint-Maurice.

- The Setup: A 3-bedroom, 2-story apartment for 6 guys. It will be tight (“cozy”), but we are there to ride, not to dance in the living room.
- The Logistics: We have the van, so a 20-minute drive to the funicular or lift is fine for us.
- The Price:€1,800 for 7 nights.
- That breaks down to €270 per night total.
- Or €45 per person/night.
- For the French Alps? That is an absolute steal.
The Bottom Line (Projected Costs)
So far, the fixed costs for this trip are surprisingly low:
- Flights: €246
- Stay: €300 (per person)
- Van: €115 (per person)
- Total Fixed Cost: €661 per person.
- The Lift Pass: Pass to access the Paradiski Area costs €401 for 6 day pass (1-day pass costs €76).
We still need to buy food and lift passes (which are expensive in Paradiski), but getting to the Alps for under €700 is a solid start. Now we just have to hope that the 320cm of snow returns for 2026.
Is Les Arcs more expensive than Austria for snowboarding?
Generally, yes. Accommodation and food/drink on the mountain are typically 20-30% more expensive in France compared to Austria. However, as our budget plan shows, if you are willing to stay in a valley town like Bourg-Saint-Maurice instead of a ski-in/ski-out resort and cook your own meals, you can keep the costs down to a similar level.
How far is the drive from Lyon Airport to Les Arcs?
The drive from Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS) to Les Arcs (Bourg-Saint-Maurice) is approximately 200km and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions.
What is the snow record for Les Arcs vs. Mayrhofen?
Based on data from the 2024/2025 season, Les Arcs had significantly more snow. The peak snow depth in Les Arcs reached 320cm in March 2025, while Mayrhofen’s peak was 80cm in December 2024. This massive difference in snow reliability is the main reason we chose Les Arcs for our 2026 trip.
Do I need to register my snowboard bag with Lufthansa?
Yes, absolutely. Buying a ticket that includes checked baggage is not enough. You must register your sports baggage (snowboard bag) separately, and this often requires calling the Lufthansa Service Center or registering your sports baggage online at least 72 hours before your flight. Failure to do so may result in your bag being refused at the airport.
